I can't relate. My wife and I scraped together what we could during my second year of grad school and bought a house in 2012. We ended up selling it 2 years ago for double what we paid and now have a very nice home on a nice lake. Lifes great!

Also grandparents: granny cooked all their food at home from scratch, packed lunch to go for grandads work and sewed her own clothes. My granny even baked white bread at home, flour is over half cheaper than buying bread from store.

Our grandparents grew up in a different environment with its own pros and cons. Now we are living in a new environment with its own pros and cons. With 25 i bought a house in a rural Area next to a big City. I live here and modernise it Step by step by myself. Cost of living was nearly non-existant... A good portion of the populace existed either outside of urban location or at least worked on them. While of course some cities were huge, their infrastructure heavily relied on agriculture, as without it, nothing else would work. Long are those days gone, where i live, agriculture is considered a wasted occupation or investment. the words uttered by several urbanites are "What did any farmer ever put on my table" (yes quoting verbatim). Farmers are the lowest class, you literally get far better options and treatment as a garbage man or janitor. Many have origins to farms in some manner that are great grand parents today (80+ years old). Sadly the work ethic and attention to spending habits are gone, not to mention inflation has greatly exceeded income for living expenses today required to essentially exist today.
